Urge politicians to back bill to ban cruel coursing
09 July 2021

Paul Murphy TD’s Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill is expected back before the Dail in the coming months. Please join us in urging politicians to give their backing to the bill which aims to finally stop coursing - a cruel bloodsport which a majority in both rural and urban areas want outlawed.

Hares suffer and die in coursing - in recent seasons, the victims have included hares who died with a spinal injury and a broken back and another with a leg injury. All the hares used in coursing suffer the fear and stress of being netted from the wild, transported in boxes and held in captivity for weeks/months before being forced to run for their lives from muzzled dogs. Those released back to the wild are at risk of later dying from stress-related capture myopathy.

It’s time for Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour and Sinn Féin to respect the wishes of the majority and reverse their current pro-coursing positions. A RED C poll has shown that 77% of citizens want coursing banned (with just 9% disagreeing with a ban).

Deputy Murphy (RISE/Solidarity, Dublin South West) introduced the Animal Health & Welfare (Ban on Hare Coursing) Bill last September. Presenting the bill - which is co-signed by TDs Gino Kenny, Mick Barry, Richard Boyd Barrett, Brid Smith, Joan Collins and Catherine Connolly - Deputy Murphy condemned coursing as “a cruel, barbaric and outdated practice”.

“It has been banned across Britain and Northern Ireland and across all of the EU, apart from three countries, including Ireland,” he stated.

A ban on coursing is long overdue. Contact TDs today and urge them to give their backing to the bill.
